Preservation New Jersey is pleased to solicit public nominations for the 2020 NJ Historic Preservation Awards for leadership, to be presented in conjunction with the Historic Preservation Office & NJ Historic Sites Council project achievement awards.
Deadline Extended! Nominations now due May 20th.
Due to concerns about large public gatherings and COVID-19, the announcement of the awards will initially occur on July 22, 2020 via media release only. The Historic Preservation Office and Preservation New Jersey will schedule a ceremony at a date TBD when it is deemed safe to gather in larger groups.
We look froward to awarding individuals, organizations, and agencies that have made a major or sustained impact within the field of history and historic preservation in New Jersey. Awards will be given to those that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to history and historic preservation in general, or to a specific resource in particular. Additional awards will be allocated based on professional, technical, and/or personal accomplishments.

Leadership Award Categories
New Preservation Initiatives Award – For organizations, individuals, and agencies that have created new initiatives and new opportunities for preservation , education, and/or community engagement in NJ.
Visionary Stewardship Award – For organizations, individuals, and agencies that have shown long-term and quality commitment to the use of a historic resource and/or the field of historic preservation in general.
Historic Preservation Commission Award – For local historical commissions or committees that have undertaken new initiatives, provided long-term quality work to their community or successfully overcome recent obstacles.
The Sarah P. Fiske Legacy Award – A lifetime achievement award for individuals that have made important and sustained contributions to the understanding and promotion of historic preservation and history in New Jersey.
Leadership Award Criteria
- Public impact on the community, region, or state.
- Quality and/or creativity of effort.
- Broadened public awareness of history & historic preservation.
- Increased partnerships to support history & historic preservation.
- Quality of the submission.
Leadership Award Submission Requirements
- Nominee contact information
- Short biographical description (250 words max)
- Narrative describing how the nominee meets the award selection criteria (1500 words max, PDF preferred)
- Hi resolution digital TIFF photographs of nominee and/or work (5 minimum – 15 maximum)
- Supporting documents such as samples of work, letters or support, etc (PDF preferred)

Achievement Award Categories
Preservation Documents – National Register nomination; Innovative Survey which contributes to regional or statewide knowledge of historic resources and/or historic context; Innovative Preservation Planning documents including architectural design guidelines, master plans, and local ordinances; Publications contributing to regional or statewide knowledge of historic resources and/or context; Historic Stucture Report or Preservation Plan.
Projects – Restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive reuse of historic buildings, structures, sites, cultural landscapes or maritime properties – especially projects that incorporate sustainability, green design and/or urban revitalization – through historic preservation.
Innovations – Pioneering or inventive efforts in sustainability, historic preservation education, or interpretive programs; Pioneering or inventive efforts in planning to preserve communities, buildings, complexes, archaeological sites or other types of historic resources; Stewardship
Achievement Award Criteria
- The NJ Historic Preservation Awards are presented to nominees judged to demonstrate exceptional merit in the field of historic preservation.
- All projects & programs must involve New Jersey historic resources eligible for listing, or already listed, in the NJ and/or National Register of Historic Places, and must meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

- High resolution digital TIFF Photographs (5 minimum – 25 maximum)
- Images must depict the nominated project. Before & after views
are encouraged. - Letters of support are desirable and should be included at the end of
the application.
