Talks with Our Ten Most: Lord Stirling School Site (2026)

Join Preservation New Jersey for the next installment of Talks with Our Ten Most, a virtual series highlighting sites included on the 2026 Ten Most Endangered Historic Places in New Jersey list.

This program will focus on the Former Lord Stirling School property at 99 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, a historically significant 10.8-acre site with connections to Revolutionary War General William Alexander, known as Lord Stirling, a close advisor to George Washington. Once part of Lord Stirling’s estate, the property may also contain important archaeological resources associated with the eighteenth-century landscape.

The discussion will explore the property’s history and significance, its archaeological potential, the threats it currently faces from redevelopment, and the preservation concerns surrounding the possible demolition of existing structures and disturbance of archaeological resources. Historic records identify the property as part of “The Garden” of the Lord Stirling estate, while its location directly across from the Lord Stirling Manor archaeological site adds to its potential importance.

Hear from local advocates and preservation partners about why the Former Lord Stirling School was selected for the 2026 Ten Most list and the ongoing efforts to raise awareness, encourage archaeological investigation, and ensure that the property’s historic and environmental significance is considered as plans for its future move forward.

The presentation will conclude with a Q&A and discussion with attendees.
